Introduction
RMI Credit Rating Initiative Presentation
With the importance that credit ratings play in the financial system, the NUS Risk Management Institute views the implementation of timely and accurate credit rating systems as a "public good".
RMI announced a large-scale credit rating initiative at a presentation during RMI's Third Annual Risk Management Conference in July, 2009. This non-profit credit rating initiative is being undertaken as a response to the recent financial crisis, with the intent to serve as a scientific competitor to the commercial credit rating agencies (CRAs) and spur research in this vital area. By 2011, this initiative will provide ratings on 500 Asian firms.
This initiative includes a call for research participation, allowing external research teams to join RMI in this program. External teams will be able to apply for full or partial funding to travel to and stay in Singapore for 3-6 months during which they can test their ideas on the extensive financial database that RMI is compiling on over 20,000 firms in Asia. In this way, RMI can tap on the global talent pool in a collaborative effort that functions as a "selective Wikipedia".
